How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture is one of the two principal components of Chinese Medicine which is based on the belief that the body possesses a network of invisible pathways called meridians. A life-energy or 'Qi' flows along these meridians. Illness occurs when Qi becomes deficient, blocked or stagnant. By placing special needles in specific points along the meridians, acupuncturists aim to restore the balance of energy in the body by clearing the meridians, each of which is associated with different parts of the body or bodily functions. One explanation of how acupuncture works is that a nerve impulse is sent to the spinal cord as a result of the needle insertion. This in turn releases the body's natural self-healing endorphins.
